We’ve worked with students just like you and helped them improve their GMAT scores to get into their top choice schools. Katie was very intelligent and had an interesting job in politics; however, she wanted to move her career (and income) forward by pursuing an MBA. She was incredibly dedicated to putting in the work and knew she would earn back the money she invested into test prep once she completed her MBA. She simply needed a guide to help her with strategies on what to focus on.
When it came to the Verbal section, Katie was a natural. She aced the Critical Reasoning questions (she was in the political field after all), and she was a huge bookworm. She did struggle a bit when it came to Sentence Correction questions, but she felt confident that she could learn the rules. The Quantitative section, on the other hand, was a bit of a different story. She always did fairly well when it came to math, but she kept making a lot of small mistakes and was taking a long time to answer questions. Not to mention, she didn’t really understand the Data Sufficiency questions entirely, which slowed her down. Each time she took a practice test, the time would run out before she could finish answering the Quant questions.
During our first sessions, we parsed out what she did well with on her own versus what she needed help with. Given that she was relatively strong in Verbal already, we deprioritized it slightly. We simply focused on reviewing the commonly tested grammar rules for the Sentence Correction questions until she felt comfortable, then she focused on independent study. This worked well because she could increase her overall score more quickly through the Verbal section, which would help her reach a 700. However, we needed to make sure that she could perform well enough on the Quantitative section because the top 10 programs would still be looking for a strong score that was comparable to the Verbal.
For the Quantitative section, Katie will tell you that she improved her score but not without putting in the work. When we reviewed strategies for Data Sufficiency that improved her accuracy and timing, she was able to bump up her score by a bit. However, there was no doubt that there were certain concepts that she simply was not familiar with. We focused on reviewing those commonly tested concepts together, and then she put in time outside of the classroom. And when I say she worked hard, I mean that she took her Official Guide to the GMAT book with her on a vacation to Italy so that she could continue her practice. It was not always easy, but we worked together to build her understanding and then she put in the time to master it. When she went to take her GMAT, she broke a 720 and was thrilled with everything she had accomplished!
