We’ve worked with students just like you and helped them improve their GRE scores to get into their top choice schools. Kevin had his sights set on a Masters of Public Policy, and had a compelling application packet -- except for his GRE score. He had never been great at standardized testing, and had tried self-study and an online course to improve his GRE score without great success. The GRE score was the only thing in the way of his success in getting accepted to his top choice MPP programs.
Kevin had a strong GPA and a diverse set of strengths. He was good at math, and relatively quick at calculations, but really struggled to break down word problems and make sense of what they were asking. He could answer Reading Comprehension questions quite accurately, but he took far too long reading the passages so would often run out of time on the Verbal sections. Luckily, Kevin was an avid reader so vocabulary wasn’t a struggle for him! Kevin needed a professional to assess his overall performance and give him a strategic plan for boosting areas where he already had strengths, and fill in the gaps where he was struggling.
We started by thoroughly assessing Kevin’s performance on previous practice tests, and watching him work through timed practice problems to get a sense of his work style when it came to the Quantitative and Verbal sections. We came up with an overview of his strengths, which allowed us to back-burner those initially and really focus in on the areas where Kevin needed help (don’t worry though, we came back around to those back-burner items before we finished our work together!).
We began by working on increasing Kevin’s reading speed without losing his retention. It doesn’t help to speed read if you can’t answer the subsequent questions! We strategized the time allocation for reading/answering and practiced, practiced, practiced. Next we carried over his reading comprehension skills to the quantitative word problems that were giving him issues. It turned out that a few skills were applicable across multiple sections, which really boosted Kevin’s confidence. Finally, we brought back in the areas where Kevin was already quite strong and made sure we did plenty of mixed practice of all question types.
By the time we finished working together, Kevin was scoring consistently higher on his practice tests, and when he took the GRE, he beat the elevated score he set for himself by 4 points! We were as excited as he was about his success!

We (Joa and Emily) met while working for Big Test Prep companies and knew there was a better, more personalized way to provide digital test prep and admissions consulting services. Thus, JEM Achievement was born: tailored and flexible support available online, no matter where you are. JEM empowers students in pursuit of advanced education through curated courses, private tutoring, and strategic coaching. We strive to have a hand in developing future leaders within their communities, instilling a solid set of values to be carried forward.
We have worked with hundreds of GMAT, GRE, and graduate admissions students over the course of our 10+ year careers in private education and know how stressful test preparation can be. With jobs, families, and life, we realize that test prep courses are difficult to add into the mix, but we also know that they are an extremely important piece of the admissions puzzle. We also realize that you don’t always know if you’re paired up with an instructor who is a good fit for you.
